Missoni x FAD Competition 2017 Art / Design / Colour
Project Proposal
My aim is to create a plus sized women’s wear collection for Missoni, using European artistic influences and technology to create prints. I would like to create a collection that is quite young with an urban feel, as I feel Missoni’s women’s wear only caters to middle aged women. I believe this would be solving the gap in the market for plus sized fashion and younger women. The reason I have chosen to create a plus sized range for Missoni, being plus sized myself I know how difficult it is to find good quality clothes with intricate designs. Also I feel as there is a huge gap in the market for plus size fashion.
I have chosen this brief as I aspire to be a fashion designer, being able to design clothes for all shapes and sizes as I believe being fashionable has no size. This brief will enhance my current professional practice and help me develop and strengthen my skill set for future opportunities. As I will have to gather primary and secondary research as well as many development methods. As Missoni is a knitwear specialist I plan to stay true to the brand and with minimal experience with knitwear I believe this will give me the opportunity to develop my knowledge on knitwear and how it is made.
For this brief I will try and find a meeting place between culture and technology by looking at technology taking apart smartphones and seeing what actually goes inside one. The reason I have chosen to do this is because I feel that smartphones are almost becoming a part of the human culture. I will also look at Wenzel Hablik’s Art work as I feel a lot of his work has a digital feel in a bright colourful way. Using Hablik’s art work for inspiration I will then take photographs of buildings that are unique, bright and colourful. By doing this I hope to combine both my technology pictures and building pictures to create a cool urban like prints on adobe Photoshop which I can then create knit samples from. The time scale I have to create this work is limited so I won’t be able to develop my ideas as much as I would like I intend to create a unique mini collection in five weeks.
I have decided to create an A5 sketchbook with all my primary research, secondary research, influences and all of my development. I plan on making different knitwear samples using bright and vibrant colours, I will also sample different types of wool and play with texture and style of knit. I will evaluate my own work as I go along annotating samples and designs. Then I will further investigate by gathering feedback from my class to see which looks that can be improved and which ones are the most effective.
My professional aims have not changed and I hope they don’t as being a designer is something I’ve wanted for a long time. Deign is one of the strengths and I can only hope to keep on improving my design skills by pushing myself to try different things i.e. knitwear.
